Alright everyone, the moment you've all been waiting for! Ok, maybe not, but that's ok, you can still read it! :) I have just finished the introduction to my novel, and I am currently working on the first chapter. I already passed my 1,700 word mark for today! My goal is 2,000 words a day though, so I will wait to post the first chapter until later. For now, enjoy the intro to In Technology We (Shouldn't Have) Trust!
Silence. Silence so loud and pronounced that it sees deafening. So thick that no force seems it would be strong enough to break it. Blackness. So dark that no light would dare pierce into it. It consumes everything, swallowing it whole with no mercy, only complete domination. Is this the end?
But suddenly, the silence is broken, and your ears fill with the heavy, hard sound of your own heart hammering inside your chest. Had it stopped? You wondered why you didn't hear your heart before. Now, it is deep and pronounced. Like the heavy, leaden footfall of someone sprinting across the hardest concrete. Beating each step painfully into the ground.
Thud. Thud. Thud.
Your suddenly ragged breathing begins to complete and mingle with the deafening roar of your pounding heart. You are pulling desperately at the thick, dark air, trying to swallow it into your lungs to find any kind of relief. None comes. You quickly suck back more, panicking, trying to regain control of your frantic body. Suddenly you find a way to gulp down some air, and it burns on the way into your lungs. Was this the end?
What if you suddenly realized that everything you ever depended on and took for granted was gone?
It is.
No more cell phone. No more internet. No more computer. TV. Land line. Satellite. No more power, no more electricity. None.
But not just yours, not only you or your town. No, it's everyone, everywhere. It is all gone, and no one knows why.
Panicking at the realization, and denial coursing through your boiling veins, you begin to suck back the thick, dark oxygen again, and find yourself tipping towards the edge of hyperventilating. The magnitude of what has happened is slamming into your brain like a freight train finding purchase against an obstruction on the train tracks. How? Why? No answers flicker to your mind. None. The darkness has swallowed it all.
It's going to come back on. It's going to come back on, it always does. You let the thought run through your mind, trying to calm the still heavy pounding of your heart against your chest.
The reply? Silence. Blackness. Nothing. It wasn't coming back on.
What if everything you ever depended on was gone?
Delete.
What if everything you ever depended on was gone- forever?
